How to test the attenuation of optical cable connectors

Attenuation of optical cable connectors is measured by evaluating the insertion loss using an OLTS or OTDR, ensuring connectors are clean, properly mated, and tested with reference jumpers.

Understanding Connector Attenuation

Connector attenuation, also called insertion loss, is the reduction in optical signal power caused by the connection between two fiber ends. It is measured in decibels (dB), and excessive loss can degrade network performance. Connector loss is influenced by factors such as end-face contamination, misalignment, and physical damage.

Tools for Testing

  1. Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS): Combines a light source and power meter to measure end-to-end loss across a fiber link, including connectors. It is the most direct method for quantifying connector attenuation .
  2. Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): Sends light pulses into the fiber and measures backscatter to identify loss points, including connectors. OTDRs provide a visual trace showing attenuation at each connector or splice .
  3. Visual Fault Locator (VFL): Uses visible light to detect breaks or bends but is not precise for measuring attenuation; it is mainly for troubleshooting .

Testing Procedures

  1. Inspect and Clean Connectors: Use a fiber microscope to check for dirt or scratches. Clean with appropriate wipes or solutions until the end-face meets industry standards .
  2. Establish Reference Measurement:
    • One-jumper method: Connect a reference jumper directly to the power meter to establish baseline power. This is preferred for permanent link testing as it minimizes measurement uncertainty .
    • Two-jumper or three-jumper methods: Used when connectors differ at each end or when pigtails are spliced onto the cable. These methods account for connector loss at one or both ends.
  3. Measure Insertion Loss:
    • Connect the fiber under test to the reference jumper and power meter.
    • Record the power level and calculate the loss by comparing it to the reference measurement.
    • For OTDR testing, analyze the trace to identify loss at each connector and calculate dB/km if needed .
  4. Bi-Directional Testing: Measure from both ends of the fiber to account for connector variability and improve accuracy .

Best Practices

  • Always clean and inspect connectors before testing.
  • Use proper launch and receive cables to avoid introducing additional loss.
  • Ensure consistent mating pressure and alignment when connecting fibers.
  • Document results and compare against manufacturer or industry standards to determine if connectors meet acceptable loss thresholds. By following these steps, technicians can accurately evaluate the attenuation of optical cable connectors, ensuring reliable network performance and minimizing signal degradation.
