1. Active Connection (Connector-Based)

Active connections use fiber optic connectors to join fibers via plugs and sockets, allowing easy connection and disconnection. This method is flexible, convenient, and widely used in building network cabling and data centers. Typical attenuation is around 1 dB per connection, and while connectors may lose 10–20% of light, they enable rapid system reconfiguration without specialized equipment. Common connector types include SC, LC, FC, and ST, each with specific ferrule designs and coupling mechanisms to ensure proper alignment and minimal insertion loss .

2. Emergency Connection (Cold Splicing)

Cold splicing, or mechanical splicing, is a temporary method that uses mechanical and chemical bonding to join two fiber ends. Fibers are carefully cut, aligned in a sleeve, and clamped. This method is quick and reliable for short-term use, with typical attenuation of 0.1–0.3 dB per point. It is suitable for emergency repairs or temporary connections but may become unstable over time. Cold splicing can be performed by trained personnel in a few minutes, making it practical for field applications .

3. Permanent Fiber Connection (Fusion Splicing)

Fusion splicing is a permanent method where fiber ends are melted and fused using an electric arc. It provides the lowest attenuation, typically 0.01–0.03 dB per point, and produces a connection nearly as strong as a single fiber. Fusion splicing is ideal for long-distance, permanent, or semi-permanent networks. It requires specialized equipment (fusion splicer) and professional operation, with the splice protected in a special container to maintain reliability .

4. Non-Splicing Physical Connection

This method uses special V-groove designs and matching liquids to achieve a permanent physical connection without fusion. It is suitable for FTTR (Fiber to the Room) solutions and can achieve nearly 100% fusion success rate. This approach combines the advantages of low insertion loss with simplified installation, making it a modern alternative to traditional splicing methods .

Key Components in Connector Interconnection

  • Ferrule: A cylindrical piece that aligns and secures the fiber for precise light transmission. Materials include ceramic, stainless steel, or polymer .
  • Connector Body/Housing: Protects the ferrule and ensures robust mechanical connection.
  • Mating Sleeve/Adapter: Aligns ferrules from two connectors to maintain low insertion loss.
  • Polish Types: APC (Angled Physical Contact) and UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) affect back reflection and insertion loss, with APC preferred for high-precision applications .
