How to measure voltage on a small busbar

Voltage on small busbars can be measured using direct voltage probes, resistive or capacitive voltage dividers, and careful consideration of voltage drop and insulation.

DC Voltage Measurement

For DC busbars, the simplest method is to measure the voltage drop between two points along the busbar using a voltmeter or data logger. Two probes are placed at a fixed distance apart, and the voltage drop is measured directly. The busbar current can then be calculated using Ohm's Law (V = I × R), where R is the resistance of the busbar segment, which depends on its material, cross-section, and temperature . Portable or semi-permanent probe holders can improve measurement consistency and safety.

AC Voltage Measurement

For AC busbars, especially at higher voltages, capacitive voltage dividers are commonly used. A capacitor plate is positioned at a fixed distance from the busbar, forming a first capacitor, while a second capacitor connects the plate to ground. The voltage at the capacitor plate is measured, and the AC voltage of the busbar is calculated based on the known capacitances and measured frequency . This method allows voltage measurement without direct current leakage and is suitable for high-voltage applications. Resistive voltage dividers can also be used, but at high voltages, they require large components and may allow leakage currents, making capacitive dividers preferable for precision and safety .

Practical Considerations

  • Voltage Drop: Even small busbars can exhibit significant voltage drops at high currents. For example, a 1 mm wide, 10 cm long copper trace carrying 10 A can drop 500 mV . Always account for this when interpreting measurements.
  • Insulation and Safety: Ensure proper insulation and grounding when measuring busbar voltage. Use insulated probes and follow dielectric strength and partial discharge testing procedures to prevent accidents .
  • Measurement Accuracy: Temperature affects busbar resistance, so consider temperature compensation for precise DC measurements. For AC, ensure capacitor tolerances and spacing are stable to avoid errors .
  • Equipment: Use high-impedance voltmeters for DC measurements to minimize loading effects. For AC, frequency measurement may be required to calculate the actual busbar voltage from the capacitive divider output . By combining these methods and precautions, accurate voltage measurement of small busbars can be achieved safely and reliably in both DC and AC systems.
