Fiber optic sensor detects light transmittance

Fiber optic sensors detect light transmittance by monitoring changes in light intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization as it travels through an optical fiber.

Working Principle

Fiber optic sensors use an optical fiber as either the sensing element (intrinsic) or as a conduit to transmit light to an external sensor (extrinsic) to measure physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, strain, or displacement (Wikipedia ; Engineer Fix ). In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself is affected by the environment, causing modulation of the light traveling through it. Extrinsic sensors use the fiber to carry light to and from a separate sensing element, where the light is modulated by the physical parameter being measured.

Light Transmittance Detection

The detection of light transmittance relies on analyzing how environmental changes affect the light within the fiber. Common mechanisms include:

  • Intensity modulation: Physical changes like bending, stretching, or compression cause some light to escape the fiber, reducing the detected intensity. This is the simplest method and requires only a light source and detector (Engineer Fix ; Wikipedia ).
  • Phase or wavelength shifts: More precise measurements use changes in the phase or wavelength of light, such as in Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, which reflect specific wavelengths that shift in response to strain or temperature (Wikipedia ; Watelectronics ).
  • Polarization changes: Certain fibers can detect electric fields or stress by observing changes in light polarization.

Components

A typical fiber optic sensor system includes a light source (laser or LED), the optical fiber, a sensing element (intrinsic or extrinsic), and a detector with signal processing electronics (Watelectronics ; Keyence ). The fiber guides light to the sensing region, where environmental changes modulate the light, and the detector measures these changes to quantify the physical parameter.

Advantages

Fiber optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, can operate in high-voltage or flammable environments, and withstand extreme temperatures (Wikipedia ; Engineer Fix ). They are small, lightweight, and capable of distributed sensing over long distances, making them ideal for applications in aerospace, civil infrastructure, energy, and medical fields.

Applications

  • Structural health monitoring of bridges, tunnels, and aircraft components (Engineer Fix )
  • Temperature and pressure monitoring in oil and gas wells (Engineer Fix )
  • Industrial automation and object detection in narrow or hazardous locations (Omron )
  • Medical devices for minimally invasive procedures (Engineer Fix ) In summary, fiber optic sensors detect light transmittance by observing how environmental factors modulate the light traveling through the fiber, providing precise, reliable, and versatile measurements across a wide range of applications.
