Fiber optic cable laying in cable trays

Fiber optic cables can be safely installed in cable trays, provided they meet NEC listing requirements and are designed to withstand mechanical and environmental stresses.

NEC Compliance and Cable Tray Use

According to the 2023 National Electric Code (NEC), any listed optical fiber cable is acceptable for installation in a cable tray, even though there is no specific "tray rating" for fiber optic cables as there is for power cables . Cable trays are considered open support systems, unlike fully enclosed raceways, and are classified as being exposed to potential mechanical damage. NEC Article 392 outlines the requirements for cable tray installations, and NEC Article 770 specifies the types of optical fiber cables allowed in trays, including conductive and non-conductive fiber optic cables .

Types of Fiber Optic Tray Cables

Fiber Optic Tray Cables (FOTC) are specifically designed for tray installations. These cables are typically tight-buffered, providing easier terminations and enhanced mechanical durability. They are engineered to withstand:

  • Aggressive pulling during installation
  • Impact from falling debris
  • Harsh temperature ranges, both hot and cold
  • UV exposure for outdoor applications FOTC cables are available in various jacket types, such as “J” jackets for cold environments (-50°C to +75°C) and “D” jackets for hot environments (-40°C to +85°C). Some cables also feature LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jackets for fire safety .

Mechanical and Environmental Considerations

Fiber optic cables in trays must maintain bend radius, crush resistance, and tensile strength to prevent damage. Tray-rated fiber cables are tested to standards such as CSA C22.2 No 230, ensuring they can handle the mechanical stresses of tray installation. Aramid strength members are often included to enhance tensile strength without adding electrical conductivity .

Advantages of Using Cable Trays

Installing fiber optic cables in trays offers several benefits:

  • Easy access for installation, maintenance, and future upgrades
  • Organized routing of multiple cables
  • Separation from power cables to reduce interference, if needed
  • Flexibility in industrial, commercial, and outdoor environments

Summary

Fiber optic cables can be laid inside cable trays safely if they are listed, mechanically robust, and suitable for the environmental conditions of the installation. Using FOTC or tray-rated fiber cables ensures compliance with NEC standards and long-term reliability, while cable trays provide organized, accessible, and flexible support for both indoor and outdoor applications.
