Access Switches

Access switches operate at the network edge, connecting end-user devices such as PCs, IP phones, printers, and wireless access points. They are characterized by high port density, Power over Ethernet (PoE) support, and basic Layer 2 features like VLAN assignment and port security. Their primary function is to provide network access to devices while enforcing security policies at the edge. Access switches are cost-effective and optimized for connecting multiple devices within a single network segment .

Aggregation (Distribution) Switches

Aggregation switches, also known as distribution switches, sit between access and core layers. They aggregate traffic from multiple access switches and forward it to the core layer. These switches often operate at Layer 2 and Layer 3, supporting inter-VLAN routing, Quality of Service (QoS), access control lists (ACLs), and link aggregation protocols like LACP. Aggregation switches improve network performance by reducing bottlenecks, providing redundancy, and enabling policy enforcement across multiple access switches. They are widely used in enterprise backbones, data centers, and large campus networks .

Core Switches

Core switches form the high-speed backbone of a network, connecting aggregation switches and handling large volumes of traffic with ultra-low latency. They are primarily Layer 3 devices, optimized for speed, scalability, and fault tolerance, and often implement redundant paths to prevent single points of failure. Core switches are essential in data centers and enterprise networks to ensure high availability and efficient inter-segment data transfer. They typically run interior routing protocols like OSPF or EIGRP and leverage technologies such as Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) for load balancing .
