Protective relays monitor electrical parameters and initiate corrective actions, such as tripping circuit breakers, to isolate faults and protect power system equipment.

Core Function

Protective relays are intelligent devices that continuously measure electrical quantities like current, voltage, frequency, impedance, and phase angle. They detect abnormal conditions such as overcurrent, short circuits, under-voltage, or frequency deviations. When a fault or unsafe condition is identified, the relay sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker or other interrupting device to isolate the affected section, preventing equipment damage and maintaining system stability .

Operational Sequence

  1. Sensing: Relays receive inputs from current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs), which provide scaled-down, safe signals representing high-voltage or high-current conditions .
  2. Decision Logic: The relay compares measured values against preset thresholds or characteristic curves. For example, an overcurrent relay operates when current exceeds a set pickup value for a defined time, while a differential relay acts when the current entering a zone differs from the current leaving it .
  3. Trip Output: If the relay determines a fault exists, it activates its output, sending a signal to the circuit breaker or other protective device .
  4. Breaker Operation: The circuit breaker physically interrupts the current flow, isolating the faulted section from the rest of the system .
  5. System Monitoring and Logging: Many relays also record events and electrical parameters for analysis, helping operators prevent future faults and maintain operational continuity .

Key Operational Requirements

  • Reliability: Relays must operate correctly under actual fault conditions and remain inactive during normal operation .
  • Selectivity: They must discriminate between faults that require immediate action and conditions that can tolerate delayed or no operation .
  • Speed: Relays should act quickly enough to minimize equipment damage but avoid unnecessary trips .
  • Sensitivity: They must detect faults even under low-magnitude or evolving abnormal conditions .

Types of Operations

  • Overcurrent Operation: Trips when current exceeds a set limit.
  • Differential Operation: Compares currents at two points to detect internal faults.
  • Distance/Impedance Operation: Measures line impedance to detect faults along transmission lines.
  • Directional Operation: Determines the direction of fault current to isolate the correct section.
  • Frequency and Voltage Operation: Protects against abnormal frequency or voltage deviations . Protective relays are essential for equipment protection, system stability, and personnel safety, ensuring that faults are cleared promptly while minimizing disruption to unaffected areas .
