Setting up two routers for fiber optic connections

You can connect two routers to a fiber optic connection by using the first router as the primary gateway and configuring the second router as an access point or secondary router to extend coverage.

Step 1: Understand Your Network Setup

Before starting, identify your fiber modem or Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which converts the fiber signal into Ethernet for your network. Determine which router will act as the primary router (directly connected to the ONT) and which will be the secondary router for extending Wi-Fi or adding extra LAN ports .

Step 2: Connect the Primary Router

  1. Plug the fiber optic cable into the WAN port of your primary router.
  2. Power on the router and connect a device (computer or laptop) to one of its LAN ports.
  3. Configure the router with your ISP-provided settings, including VLAN ID if required.
  4. Ensure the DHCP server is enabled on the primary router to assign IP addresses to devices on the network .

Step 3: Configure the Secondary Router

  1. Connect the secondary router to a LAN port of the primary router using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Access the secondary router's configuration page via a web browser.
  3. Set the secondary router to Access Point mode or bridge mode if supported .
  4. Assign a static IP address to the secondary router within the same subnet as the primary router (e.g., if the primary router is 192.168.1.1, set the secondary to 192.168.1.2) to avoid IP conflicts .
  5. Disable DHCP on the secondary router so that the primary router manages all IP assignments .
  6. Optionally, set a different SSID for the secondary router to distinguish networks or use the same SSID for seamless roaming .

Step 4: Optimize Placement and Wi-Fi Settings

  • Place the primary router centrally in your home or office for balanced coverage.
  • Position the secondary router where the primary router's signal is strong but coverage is needed in additional areas.
  • Adjust Wi-Fi channels to minimize interference and ensure both routers operate on compatible frequency bands .

Step 5: Test and Troubleshoot

  • Test connectivity in different areas to ensure both routers provide stable internet access.
  • Check for IP conflicts or connectivity issues and adjust settings as needed.
  • Verify that devices connected to the secondary router can access the internet and communicate with devices on the primary router's network . By following these steps, you can effectively extend your fiber optic network, improve Wi-Fi coverage, and maintain a stable, high-speed connection throughout your home or office.
