Optical Power Meter Test Experiment Report

An Optical Power Meter Experiment Report documents the measurement of optical power, analysis of losses, and comparison with theoretical predictions using calibrated or non-calibrated optical power meters.

1. Title

"Measurement of Optical Power Using an Optical Power Meter"

2. Objective

  • To understand the basic principles of optical power measurement using an optical power meter .
  • To differentiate between calibrated and non-calibrated optical power meters .
  • To measure optical power loss through optical components such as microscope glass slides or optical fibers .
  • To practice proper use of optical power units (dBm, mW) and conversions between them .

3. Equipment

  • Optical Power Meter (e.g., INFOS Model M100)
  • HeNe Laser or LED source (e.g., 31-2090-000)
  • Optical fibers or microscope glass slides
  • Fiber optic trainer board or optical bench
  • Translation stages and holders for alignment
  • Power supply and connecting cables

4. Theory

  • Optical power meters measure the intensity of light in milliwatts (mW) or decibels-milliwatts (dBm).
  • Losses occur due to reflection, absorption, or scattering in optical components.
  • The propagation loss in fibers or slides can be calculated using the formula: Loss (dB)=10log10PinputPoutput
  • Wavelength selection is important because detector responsivity varies with wavelength .

5. Procedure

  1. Connect the optical source to the optical power meter using fiber or free-space alignment .
  2. Set the wavelength on the power meter to match the source (e.g., 660 nm, 850 nm, 1310 nm), .
  3. Record the input power without any optical component in the path.
  4. Insert optical components (e.g., glass slides or fiber segments) and measure the output power.
  5. Repeat measurements for different numbers of slides or fiber lengths to observe cumulative losses.
  6. Note all readings in a table for analysis .

6. Observations and Data

  • Create a table showing input power, output power, and calculated loss for each configuration.
  • Include units in dBm or mW and ensure consistency.
  • Example table format:
Number of SlidesInput Power (dBm)Output Power (dBm)Loss (dB)
00.000.000.00
10.00-0.150.15
20.00-0.300.30

7. Analysis

  • Compare experimental losses with theoretical predictions based on reflection and absorption coefficients .
  • Discuss any discrepancies due to alignment errors, detector nonlinearity, or wavelength mismatch .
  • Plot loss vs. number of slides or fiber length to visualize trends.

8. Conclusion

  • Summarize the effectiveness of the optical power meter in measuring optical power.
  • Highlight the observed losses and their agreement with theory.
  • Comment on the importance of calibration and wavelength selection for accurate measurements .
