What kind of machine is used to fuse multimode optical cables

A fusion splicer is the machine used to join multimode optical fibers by precisely aligning and melting their ends together.

What is a Fusion Splicer?

A fusion splicer is a high-precision device that permanently joins two optical fibers by applying heat, typically from an electric arc, to melt and fuse the glass ends into a continuous optical path . This process ensures minimal signal loss and strong mechanical integrity, which is essential for maintaining network performance.

How It Works

  1. Preparation: The fiber coatings are stripped, cleaned, and cleaved to create smooth, flat ends .
  2. Alignment: The splicer uses cameras and motors to align the fiber ends. For multimode fibers, cladding alignment is often sufficient, as the larger core diameter (~50–62.5 µm) allows for slightly less precise alignment compared to single-mode fibers .
  3. Fusion: An electric arc melts the fiber ends, fusing them together.
  4. Protection: A heat-shrink sleeve is applied over the splice to protect the joint .

Types of Fusion Splicers

  • Core Alignment Splicers: Align the fiber cores with submicron precision, ideal for single-mode fibers but can also be used for multimode fibers when high performance is required .
  • Cladding Alignment Splicers: Align fibers by their outer cladding, simpler and more cost-effective, commonly used for multimode fibers in LANs or less demanding applications .
  • Ribbon Splicers: Designed to fuse multiple fibers simultaneously (up to 12), increasing efficiency for high-count multimode cables .
  • Portable/Handheld Splicers: Compact units suitable for fieldwork or emergency repairs, offering similar functionality to benchtop models .

Key Considerations for Multimode Fiber

Multimode fibers have larger cores than single-mode fibers, so cladding alignment fusion splicers are often sufficient, providing low insertion loss (~0.1 dB) and reliable connections for local area networks or short-distance applications . Core alignment splicers can be used if lower loss and higher return loss are desired. In summary, fusion splicers—whether core or cladding alignment—are the standard machines used to fuse multimode optical cables, offering precise alignment, minimal signal loss, and durable fiber connections .
