If only a few modes are excited, the output can fluctuate with fiber position or handling, producing non-Gaussian or “donut” beam profiles . Practical Considerations

  • Ensure the focused spot size is smaller than the fiber core radius and the incident angle is within the fiber NA .
  • For extended or diffuse sources, imaging the light onto the fiber end face can improve collection efficiency.
  • Multimode fibers are more tolerant of alignment errors than single-mode fibers, but careful adjustment of lens position and angle is still critical for high efficiency .
