Configuration of Digital Monitoring Core Switch

A digital monitoring core switch should be configured with full gigabit uplinks, integrated monitoring interfaces, and proper bandwidth planning to ensure reliable data flow and environmental monitoring.

Core Switch Role and Selection

The core switch serves as the backbone of a hierarchical network, connecting aggregation and access layer switches while routing and switching large volumes of data. Key considerations for selecting a core switch include high forwarding rate, Quality of Service (QoS) support, redundancy, and compliance with Ethernet protocols. For large monitoring systems, a full gigabit port core switch is recommended to handle high-definition video streams and multiple VLANs efficiently .

Monitoring Interface Configuration

Monitoring interfaces allow the network management system (NMS) to track the status of switch components such as maintenance compartment doors, cabinet doors, and backup power supplies. To configure these interfaces:

  • Connect the monitoring interfaces to sensors for doors and power supplies.
  • Configure the DOUT status to reflect the normal state of doors (enabled or disabled).
  • Set up trap notifications to the NMS for abnormal events, such as door openings or power supply faults .
  • Ensure the NMS is associated with the monitoring interfaces for real-time alerts.

Bandwidth and Port Planning

For digital monitoring systems, especially with IP cameras:

  • Calculate switch capacity: Switch Capacity = Port Numbers × Port Speed × 2.
  • Determine forwarding rate: Forwarding Rate = Port Numbers × Port Speed / 1000 × 1.488 Mpps.
  • Ensure uplink ports from aggregation to core switches are gigabit to accommodate total camera stream bandwidth. For example, 6 cameras at 4 Mbps each on 5 aggregation switches require at least 120 Mbps uplink capacity .
  • Use line-speed switches with sufficient cache to prevent delays in high-volume video data.

Integration with NMS

  • Assign monitoring interfaces to the NMS for centralized management.
  • Configure traps for environmental events and switch faults.
  • Regularly test the core switch's performance and redundancy to ensure uninterrupted monitoring.

Best Practices

  • Deploy redundant power supplies and cooling modules for high availability.
  • Use full gigabit or higher ports for all uplinks to prevent bottlenecks.
  • Implement VLAN segmentation for monitoring traffic to prioritize video streams.
  • Periodically verify trap notifications and interface status to maintain system reliability. By following these guidelines, a digital monitoring core switch can provide robust, high-performance connectivity and real-time environmental monitoring for large-scale network surveillance systems .
