Optical grating fibers, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), are specialized optical fibers with periodic refractive index variations that reflect specific wavelengths while transmitting others, enabling precise sensing and filtering applications.

Principles and Structure

An optical grating fiber contains a periodic or aperiodic modulation of the refractive index along a short segment of the fiber core. In FBGs, this modulation is typically on the order of hundreds of nanometers, forming a wavelength-specific reflector known as a Bragg mirror, which reflects light that satisfies the Bragg condition while allowing other wavelengths to pass through . Long Period Gratings (LPGs), in contrast, have longer periods (hundreds of micrometers) and couple light from the core to the cladding, effectively filtering specific wavelength bands . The grating is created by exposing a photosensitive fiber core to intense ultraviolet (UV) light, producing permanent changes in the refractive index. This results in alternating regions of higher and lower refractive index, forming the grating structure . The reflected wavelength, called the Bragg wavelength, depends on the grating period and the effective refractive index of the fiber.

Fabrication Techniques

Early FBGs were fabricated using visible lasers along the fiber axis, while modern methods employ transverse holographic inscription, where UV laser interference patterns are projected from the side of the fiber to create precise periodic structures . These techniques allow for high control over grating length, period, and reflectivity, enabling tailored optical properties.

Applications

Optical grating fibers are widely used in:

  • Telecommunications: FBGs act as inline filters or wavelength-specific reflectors to stabilize and manage optical signals .
  • Sensing: FBGs and LPGs detect strain, temperature, and pressure changes by monitoring shifts in the reflected wavelength, making them ideal for structural health monitoring in aerospace, civil infrastructure, and industrial systems .
  • Multiplexed sensing: Multiple gratings can be embedded in a single fiber to measure several parameters simultaneously, enhancing efficiency in complex monitoring systems .

Advantages and Considerations

Optical grating fibers are compact, lightweight, and immune to electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for harsh environments. They offer high sensitivity and precision, but their performance can be affected by temperature variations, fabrication complexity, and cost . Recent innovations, such as temperature-compensated FBGs and multi-parameter sensing, have expanded their reliability and versatility.
