How APC Works

  2. Compare: The measured power is compared to the target output setpoint.

In optical amplifiers like the EDFA2 line card, APC is implemented using two independent control loops: one for the transmit (TX) direction, adjusting VOA (Variable Optical Attenuator) attenuation, and one for the receive (RX) direction, adjusting pre-amplifier gain .   • AGC locks the amplifier gain, allowing output power to fluctuate with input changes. Best for multi-channel DWDM systems where uniform gain is required.

Practical Considerations

While APC stabilizes output power, it can increase Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise if the input signal drops too low, as the amplifier compensates by increasing pump power . Therefore, proper network design, including span loss management and input power monitoring, is essential.
