Principle of FBG Temperature Sensing

A Fiber Bragg Grating is a short segment of optical fiber with a periodic pattern of refractive index variations, created using intense UV light . When light passes through the fiber, a specific wavelength—called the Bragg wavelength—is reflected, while other wavelengths are transmitted. Temperature changes cause the fiber to expand or contract and alter its refractive index, shifting the Bragg wavelength. This shift is proportional to the temperature change, allowing precise temperature measurement .

Measurement and Interrogation Techniques

FBG temperature sensors require an interrogation system to detect wavelength shifts. Common techniques include :

  • Optical Spectrum Analysis (OSA): Provides high-resolution wavelength detection and a wide temperature range, suitable for research applications.
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM): Cost-effective for multiple sensors, widely used in commercial systems.
  • Optical Interferometry: Offers exceptional sensitivity and high resolution but limited temperature range.
  • Optical Edge Filtering: Good sensitivity and resolution, with performance dependent on filter characteristics.
  • Time Division Multiplexing (TDM): Enables multiple sensors on a single fiber but requires careful spatial separation to avoid cross-talk.

Accuracy and Calibration

FBG temperature sensors can achieve high accuracy, but performance depends on sensor calibration and environmental conditions. For example, a study using isolated FBGs for temperature measurement reported a total uncertainty of 3.4°C, while FBG arrays with multiple sensing points achieved 0.4°C uncertainty for temperature readings . Proper calibration of the sensor's sensitivity constant is critical to minimize errors.
