How to wire the lighting circuit in the main electrical distribution box
To wire a lighting circuit in a distribution box, connect the main supply to the main MCB, route the output through an RCCB, and then connect each lighting sub-circuit to individual MCBs with proper phase, neutral, and earth connections.
Step 1: Prepare the Distribution Box
Start by identifying the main incoming supply (phase and neutral) and ensure the distribution box (DB) has the appropriate MCBs and RCCB for your load. For domestic lighting circuits, a single-phase 230V supply is typical, with a double-pole MCB as the main switch and single-pole MCBs for each lighting sub-circuit . Ensure the DB is properly earthed.
Step 2: Connect the Main Supply
- Connect the phase and neutral wires from the incoming supply to the input terminals of the main MCB.
- Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. The RCCB protects against leakage currents and electric shocks .
- Connect the earth wire from the supply to the earth link in the DB.
Step 3: Connect Lighting Sub-Circuits
- Each lighting sub-circuit should have its phase wire connected to the output of a single-pole MCB.
- Connect the neutral wire of each sub-circuit to the neutral link in the DB.
- Connect the earth wire to the earth link.
- Ensure the MCB rating matches the load; for typical lighting circuits, 10A or 16A MCBs are common .
Step 4: Wiring the Junction Box
- At the lighting junction box, strip the wires and connect the phase (live) wires from the DB to the switch input.
- Connect the switch output to the lighting fixture.
- Join all neutral wires together and connect to the neutral from the DB.
- Connect all earth wires together and to the fixture's earth terminal .
- Use wire connectors and secure the wires neatly with electrical tape or cable ties.
Step 5: Testing and Safety
- Before turning on the power, double-check all connections for correct phase, neutral, and earth wiring.
- Switch on the main MCB and RCCB, then test each lighting circuit individually.
- Ensure there are no loose connections, sparks, or tripped breakers.
