How to connect the grounding electrode and the distribution box

Drive an 8-foot grounding rod near the distribution box, connect it with a properly sized grounding electrode conductor to the panel's grounding bus, and ensure all electrodes are bonded according to NEC standards.

Selecting the Location

Choose a spot as close as practicable to the distribution box while avoiding underground utilities such as gas or water lines. Always call 811 before digging to prevent accidents. The rod should ideally be placed in soil with permanent moisture to improve conductivity and reduce resistance to earth .

Ground Rod Installation

  • Use a copper-clad steel or stainless steel rod, at least 8 feet long and 5/8 inch in diameter .
  • Drive the rod vertically into the ground until the top is flush with or slightly below grade. If bedrock is encountered, the rod may be driven at an angle not exceeding 45 degrees or buried in a trench at least 30 inches deep .
  • For multiple rods, maintain a minimum spacing of 6 feet to avoid overlapping soil influence and connect them with a bonding jumper .

Connecting the Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC)

  • Use a listed, irreversible clamp or approved connector to attach the GEC to the rod .
  • Run a continuous, correctly sized conductor from the rod to the main grounding bus bar in the distribution box. The conductor size is determined by the service-entrance conductors according to NEC Table 250.66 .
  • Ensure the main bonding jumper connects the neutral bus bar to the grounding bus bar in the main panel only; do not bond neutral and ground in subpanels .

Testing and Supplementing

  • A single rod should ideally have a resistance to ground of 25 ohms or less. If this is not achievable, install a second rod and bond it to the first .
  • The NEC does not require measuring resistance if a supplemental rod is installed, but proper spacing and bonding are essential .

Additional Considerations

  • Avoid using aluminum, underground gas piping, or pool shells as electrodes .
  • Ensure all electrodes in the building are bonded together to form a unified grounding system .
  • For subpanels, maintain separation of neutral and ground to prevent parallel neutral paths, which can energize metal enclosures . Following these steps ensures a safe, low-impedance path for fault currents, stabilizes voltage, and complies with NEC 2023 grounding and bonding requirements.
