  • Electrical-to-Optical Conversion (Tx): The transmitting interface receives electrical signals from network devices, which are processed by internal driver circuits. These signals drive a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) to emit modulated optical signals at the corresponding data rate .
  • Optical-to-Electrical Conversion (Rx): The receiving interface captures incoming optical signals and converts them back into electrical signals using a photodetector diode, followed by amplification and signal conditioning to ensure proper output .
  • Signal Integrity and Monitoring: Many modules include automatic power control (APC) circuits to maintain consistent optical output and digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) to track parameters like temperature, voltage, and optical power .

Components of Optical Modules

Optical modules typically consist of:

  • TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts electrical signals into optical signals using LDs or LEDs, and includes optical interfaces and monitoring photodiodes .
  • ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts optical signals back into electrical signals. It contains a photodetector (PIN or avalanche photodiode, APD), a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), and a post-amplifier to produce digital signals suitable for processing .
  • Driver and Receiver Circuits: Control the modulation of the laser and amplification of received signals to maintain signal integrity .
  • Housing and Interfaces: Provide mechanical protection, optical alignment, and electrical connectivity to network devices .

Key Functions of Receivers

The receiver component of an optical module is critical for accurate signal detection:

  • Photodetection: Converts incoming light into a weak electrical current. APDs offer higher sensitivity than PIN photodiodes due to avalanche multiplication, improving signal detection by 6–10 dB .
  • Amplification: The TIA amplifies the weak photocurrent into a voltage signal, which is then processed by a post-amplifier to produce a stable digital output .
  • Sensitivity and Power Handling: Receivers have defined sensitivity limits (minimum optical power for reliable detection) and overload limits (maximum optical power before signal distortion or bit errors occur) .
