Optical Modules

Optical modules are devices that convert electrical data into optical signals to overcome the limitations of electrical transmission, enabling high data rates such as 100 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and beyond 800 Gbps . They are commonly implemented in standardized form factors like QSFP-DD or OSFP, which impose strict size and thermal constraints. Key components include digital signal processors (DSPs), clock and data recovery (CDR) circuits, and gearboxes, all of which require precise voltage regulation and high current supply while minimizing power loss . Optical-to-electrical converters are also integral to these systems, allowing optical signals to be converted back into electrical signals for measurement, processing, or further transmission. These converters can be broadband, high-bandwidth, and configurable for AC or DC coupling, multiple channels, and various gain levels, supporting applications in R&D, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and laboratory measurements .

AC-DC and DC-DC Converters in Optical Modules

Power management is critical in optical modules due to limited space and thermal budgets. AC-DC converters provide the initial power conversion from mains or system-level AC supply to DC voltages, which are then often stepped down by DC-DC buck converters to supply the multiple voltage rails required by DSPs and other subsystems . Modern solutions focus on:

  • High efficiency to reduce heat generation and maintain thermal limits.
  • Compact integration to fit within the small form factors of optical modules.
  • Low noise and high power density to ensure signal integrity and reliable operation . Some advanced designs, such as photonic power converters using liquid-crystal optical modulators, can perform DC-AC conversion without traditional power switches, reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and improving power quality with low total harmonic distortion (THD), .

Integration Considerations

Designers must balance power delivery, thermal dissipation, and signal quality. Techniques include:

  • Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) for DSPs to adjust supply voltage based on performance needs and temperature .
  • Optimized voltage setpoints for each DSP vendor to minimize power consumption.
  • Placement of power converters on the back side of PCBs where height is limited, often around 1.2 mm .
