How to configure two 10 Gigabit optical ports on a switch

Dual optical ports on a 10G switch can be configured using SFP+ modules, with only one port active per combo pair, and proper link settings applied for distance, speed, and duplex.

Understanding Dual Optical (Combo) Ports

A combo port is a single logical port that supports two physical interfaces: an RJ45 copper port and an SFP optical port. Only one interface can be active at a time; activating the SFP port automatically disables the RJ45 port and vice versa . This design allows flexibility in network deployment, enabling either short-range copper connections or longer-range fiber connections without requiring additional switch ports.

Selecting the Appropriate SFP+ Module

  • Short-distance (up to 7 meters): Use Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables for low-latency, cost-effective connections within racks .
  • Medium-distance (7–300 meters): Use Active Optical Cables (AOC) or multi-mode SFP+ modules with OM3 fiber .
  • Long-distance (>300 meters): Use single-mode SFP+ transceivers for distances up to 100 km, depending on the module type . Ensure the SFP+ module matches the fiber type and distance requirements to avoid link failures.

Configuring the Ports

  1. Enable the SFP+ interface on the switch CLI and disable the copper interface if using a combo port.
  2. Set the port speed and duplex to 10G full-duplex. On some switches, the first link that comes up in a quad or port group sets the speed for all ports in that group . Mixing speeds within a quad group is not supported.
  3. Assign VLANs or trunk settings as needed. For Juniper QFX switches, use the ether-options statement to configure link mode, autonegotiation, and aggregation settings .
  4. Enable Layer 2 protocols such as UDLD to detect unidirectional links and prevent spanning tree loops .
  5. Verify connectivity using show interface commands to ensure the link is up and the correct SFP+ module is recognized.

Best Practices

  • Avoid mixing transceiver types in the same quad group; mismatched modules can reset all ports in the group .
  • Use proper fiber patch cables (LC connectors for SFP+) and maintain clean connectors to prevent signal loss.
  • Monitor link status and error counters to detect potential issues early.
  • Consider link aggregation if higher bandwidth or redundancy is required, ensuring all aggregated ports use compatible SFP+ modules and speeds. By following these guidelines, dual optical ports on a 10G switch can be configured efficiently for both short and long-distance connections while maintaining network stability and performance.
