Types of MPO Fiber Optic Patch Cords

MPO fiber optic patch cords are classified by fiber count, fiber type, polarity, and end-face polishing, with performance metrics such as insertion loss and return loss guiding their selection.

Classification by Fiber Core Count

MPO patch cords can terminate multiple fibers in a single connector, typically including 8, 12, 16, 24, or 32 fibers per connector. Higher fiber counts reduce cable bulk and simplify high-density installations in data centers and backbone networks .

Classification by Fiber Type

  • Single-mode (OS2): Designed for long-distance transmission, often exceeding 10 km, suitable for high-speed backbone links .
  • Multi-mode (OM3, OM4, OM5): Optimized for short-distance, high-speed applications, typically ranging from 100 to 550 meters, ideal for 40G, 100G, and 400G Ethernet deployments .

Classification by Polarity

Polarity ensures correct mapping of transmit and receive channels across multiple fibers:

  • Type A (Straight-through): Fiber positions match on both ends (1→1, 2→2, etc.)
  • Type B (Reversed): Fiber positions are reversed (1→12, 2→11, etc.)
  • Type C (Pair-wise Flipped): Adjacent fibers are flipped in pairs (1→2, 2→1, etc.),

Classification by End-face Polishing

  • PC (Physical Contact): Spherical polishing, commonly used in multi-mode applications
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8-degree angled polishing, providing lower return loss, mainly used in single-mode systems

Performance Metrics

  • Insertion Loss (IL): Typically <0.5 dB for multi-mode and <0.35 dB for single-mode, ensuring minimal signal attenuation
  • Return Loss (RL): PC end-face >35 dB, APC end-face >60 dB, critical for maintaining signal integrity in high-speed networks

Additional Considerations

MPO patch cords may also be classified by cable structure:

  • Single-tube trunk cables: All fibers in one protective tube, compact and easy to manage
  • Multi-unit trunk cables: Multiple independent fiber units combined, offering flexibility and scalability for very high-density deployments Understanding these classifications is essential for selecting the correct MPO patch cord for specific network requirements, ensuring compatibility with transceivers, minimizing insertion loss, and maintaining high-density connectivity in modern data centers .
