Step 1: Fiber Preparation

  • Strip the fiber coating carefully, usually 10–20 mm depending on the splicer specifications, using a precision fiber stripper to avoid microfractures .
  • Clean the exposed fiber with lint-free wipes soaked in 99%+ isopropyl alcohol, wiping from the coating edge to the cleave tip in a single stroke to remove dust, oil, or other contaminants .
  • Inspect the fiber ends under a microscope or splicer camera to ensure cleanliness and absence of scratches or residue .

Step 2: Fiber Cleaving

  • Use a fiber cleaver to make a precise, perpendicular cut at the fiber tip. A clean cleave is critical for low-loss splicing and proper light transmission .
  • Ensure the fiber is held steadily during cleaving to prevent bending or microfractures.

Step 3: Fusion Splicing

  • Load the fiber ends into the fusion splicer, aligning them according to the fiber type program on the machine .
  • The splicer generates an electric arc to fuse the fibers, creating a continuous optical path with minimal reflection and attenuation .
  • Monitor the splicing process and verify alignment and arc parameters as recommended by the splicer manufacturer.

Step 4: Splice Protection

  • After fusion, apply a protective sleeve or re-coat the splice to maintain mechanical strength and long-term durability .
  • Heat-shrink sleeves or reinforced coatings are commonly used to prevent breaks near the splice joint.

Step 5: Testing the Splice

  • Use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or a loss test set to measure splice loss and ensure it meets standards such as ITU-T G.652 .
  • Perform tensile-strength tests if required to confirm the splice can withstand handling and environmental stress.
