Jamaica is investing in a US$45–55 million subsea fiber optic cable project to enhance digital infrastructure, reduce internet costs, and position the island as a Caribbean digital hub.Project Overv...
The Government of Jamaica has signed a Letter of Intent with Trans Americas Fiber System (TAF) to join the TAM-1 subsea cable network, which will deliver up to 20 terabits per second of dedicated bandwidth to the island . The initiative aims to expand, secure, and upgrade Jamaica's international fiber optic connectivity, improving broadband reliability, speed, and affordability . The project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's digital infrastructure and resilience, particularly after Hurricane Melissa damaged above-ground telecommunications networks in late 2025 .
The total project cost is estimated between US$45 million and US$55 million, depending on the capacity acquired by the government . An initial payment of J$960 million was allocated in the 2025/26 fiscal year to Trans Americas Fiber Systems Limited . Construction of the subsea cable is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the cable becoming operational by the third quarter of 2027 . The final agreement is anticipated to be signed later in 2026 .
The TAM-1 system is a 7,000-kilometre subsea network linking Florida to Central America and the wider Caribbean, with Jamaica added in the second deployment phase . Dominant local operators, Digicel and Flow, are also investing in fiber upgrades to improve last-mile and backbone connectivity . The project is expected to support the growing Caribbean fintech market, valued at US$1.2 billion in 2025, and accommodate high mobile penetration and regional remittances . This subsea cable initiative represents a strategic investment in Jamaica's digital future, ensuring faster, more reliable, and cost-effective internet while positioning the island as a competitive hub for digital services in the Caribbean.
