A visible fault locator (VFL) emits a red light that can often pinpoint the exact location of a break. This method is simple, quick, and ideal for troubleshooting, but it does not provide quantitative measurements of signal loss or attenuation .

2. Power Meter and Light Source Testing (One-Jumper Method)

Also known as the optical loss test set (OLTS) method, this technique measures end-to-end signal loss (attenuation) across a fiber optic link. A light source is connected to one end of the fiber, and a power meter measures the light received at the other end. This method is highly accurate for determining insertion loss at connector pairs, splices, and the overall fiber link.
