How to use the X-ray machine in the testing module

Using Xray involves creating test cases, defining detailed test steps, linking them to Jira issues, and optionally integrating with automation tools for execution and reporting.

1. Setting Up Xray in Jira

• Install the Xray app from the Atlassian Marketplace if it is not already installed. Xray adds new Jira issue types such as Test, Test Plan, Test Set, and Test Execution to manage testing activities .
• Organize your projects either by keeping existing Jira projects separate or integrating them with Xray for centralized test management .

2. Creating Test Cases

• Click the Create button in Jira and select the Test issue type .
• Choose the project and ensure the issue status is set to Open.
• For manual tests, enter the test description, assign versions, and set assignees and reporters.
• For BDD/Cucumber tests, write scenarios using Gherkin syntax (Scenario or Scenario Outline) that can be executed by external automation tools .
• For other automated or generic tests, select the appropriate test type.

3. Defining Test Steps

• Click Add Step to define individual test steps .
• For each step, fill in:
  • Action: The specific task to perform.
  • Data: Input data required for the step.
  • Expected Result: The expected outcome if the step is successful.
• You can add new steps, insert steps between existing ones, or import steps from other test issues .
• Edit steps by hovering over the step and clicking the field you want to modify, then enter edit mode .

4. Organizing Test Plans and Sets

• Navigate to the Test Plans tab and click Add to Test Plans to link the test to an existing plan or create a new one .
• Test Sets can be used to group related tests for easier management and execution tracking .

5. Linking Tests to Requirements

• Link each test to relevant Jira issues or user stories to ensure traceability .
• For automated tests, annotate the test code with the Xray test key or definition to connect test runs with the original test case .

6. Executing Tests

• For manual tests, execute steps directly in Jira and record results.
• For automated tests, integrate your automation tool (e.g., Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, Cucumber, Postman) with Xray .
• Configure your project to generate test reports (e.g., Cucumber JSON) and upload them to Xray using the REST API .
• Xray will create Test Executions and Test Runs based on the imported results, linking them to the original test cases .

7. Tracking and Reporting

• Monitor test progress, coverage, and execution results through Xray dashboards and reports .
• Use pre-conditions to define reusable setups, reducing duplication and improving test reusability .
• Prioritize tests based on risk and track compliance for informed release decisions . By following these steps, you can systematically manage both manual and automated testing within Jira using Xray, ensuring traceability, consistency, and efficient reporting.
