Pakistan has announced an ambitious plan to lay 200,000 kilometers of optical fiber cable to significantly enhance digital connectivity across the country. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, aims to support IT growth, improve internet access, and facilitate digital payment systems for freelancers and businesses. USF Optical Fiber Program

The Universal Service Fund (USF) is actively rolling out 2,000 kilometers of optical fiber cable during the fiscal year 2024-25. This program, launched in November 2020, focuses on deep fiberization at the Union Council (UC) level, targeting rural and underserved areas. To date, USF has completed 17 major projects, connecting 884 UCs with 9,068 km of fiber, providing essential backhaul for existing 3G and 4G networks and laying the groundwork for future 5G expansion . The rollout prioritizes areas lacking telecom services, with assessments conducted for underserved locations such as Chak numbers 67nb, 163nb, 112nb, and 152nb in Sargodha district. Once necessary licenses are issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), USF plans to expand 5G infrastructure to these regions .
