Purpose of Heat Shrink Tubing

Components of Fiber Optic Heat Shrink Tubing

Specialized fiber optic heat shrink tubing typically consists of three main components:

  • Outer Heat Shrinkable Tube: Made from cross-linked polyolefin, this layer shrinks uniformly when heated to encapsulate the fiber and inner components .
  • Inner Hot Melt Adhesive: An EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) liner that melts during heating to form a moisture-proof seal around the fiber, filling voids and preventing water or dust ingress .
  • Reinforcement Rod: Usually stainless steel or ceramic, this rigid rod provides mechanical strength, preventing micro-bending and protecting the fiber from warping or damage during installation .

Installation Process

  1. Prepare the Fiber: Strip the protective coating at the splice point and clean the fiber ends.
  2. Insert the Fiber: Slide the heat shrink tubing over the fiber, ensuring the splice is centered within the clear sleeve for visibility .
  3. Apply Heat: Use a heat gun or specialized oven to evenly heat the tubing. The outer tube shrinks, the inner adhesive melts, and the reinforcement rod secures the fiber.
  4. Inspect: After cooling, check that the tubing has fully encapsulated the splice and that the fiber is properly aligned and protected .
