Fiber optic splicing and fiber optic couplers

Connecting a fiber optic cable to a coupler does not necessarily require splicing; connectors can often be used for temporary or flexible connections.

Connection Options

Fiber optic cables can be joined to couplers in two main ways: splicing or using connectors. Splicing creates a permanent joint between fibers, either through fusion splicing, which melts fibers together for minimal loss and high durability, or mechanical splicing, which aligns fibers in a sleeve using index-matching gel . Splices are typically used in outside plant installations or when a permanent, low-loss connection is required. Connectors, on the other hand, are mechanical terminations that allow fibers to be plugged into couplers or network equipment. Common connector types include LC, SC, ST, FC, and MPO/MTP. Connectors are designed for easy installation, reconfiguration, and patching, making them suitable for couplers where flexibility is needed .

Coupler Types and Termination

Fiber couplers can be fabricated in several ways, including fused couplers, where fibers are thermally tapered and fused, or planar lightwave circuits with fibers pig-tailed to the device . In many cases, couplers come with pre-terminated fiber pigtails, allowing the user to connect the fiber optic cable using standard connectors without splicing . This approach avoids the need for permanent splicing while still providing reliable optical performance.

Practical Considerations

  • Singlemode fibers often require careful handling; splicing may be preferred for permanent, low-loss connections.
  • Multimode fibers are easier to terminate with connectors, and field terminations are commonly done without splicing .
  • Environmental factors: For harsh outdoor conditions, splices may offer better durability, while connectors are suitable for indoor or easily accessible installations . In summary, fiber optic splicing is not always required to connect a cable to a coupler. If the coupler has pre-terminated pigtails or if the installation allows for connectorized connections, connectors can be used effectively. Splicing is mainly necessary when a permanent, low-loss joint is needed or when connecting directly to bare fibers.
