Fiber Optic Fusion Splice Specifications

Fusion splicing requires precise fiber preparation, accurate alignment, controlled splicing conditions, and proper protection to ensure low optical loss and long-term mechanical stability.

Fiber Preparation

Proper fiber preparation is critical for a successful fusion splice. The fiber coating must be stripped carefully using precision strippers appropriate for the fiber diameter (typically 250µm for bare fibers and 900µm for coated fibers) to avoid microfractures or damage to the glass core . The recommended strip length is usually between 10–20 mm depending on the splicer specifications. After stripping, the fiber ends must be thoroughly cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oil, or other contaminants, as even microscopic debris can degrade splice quality . A precision cleaver is then used to create a flat, perpendicular end face, as the cleave quality directly affects splice loss .

Alignment and Splicing

Fusion splicing aligns two fibers and fuses them using a controlled electric arc. Modern fusion splicers are mostly automated, but proper setup is essential. The splicer requires preset parameters or factory-recommended settings to control the arc duration, intensity, and alignment process . Accurate alignment minimizes insertion loss and reflectance, which is especially critical for single-mode fibers and long-distance networks . Misalignment can lead to increased optical loss and reduced long-term reliability.

Protection and Mechanical Stability

After fusion, the splice area is mechanically vulnerable. Protective sleeves, either heat-shrink or clamshell types, are applied to reinforce the splice and prevent damage from vibration, thermal cycling, or cable movement . Even if the optical loss is low immediately after splicing, insufficient protection can compromise long-term stability. Proper handling during installation, including maintaining a bending radius greater than 30 mm, is also essential to prevent stress on the splice .

Quality Control and Testing

Splice quality is verified using the splicer's built-in loss estimation or an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR). The operator should inspect the splice visually in both X and Y axes to detect flaws such as bubbles, black spots, or core offsets . Some minor imperfections may be acceptable, but significant defects require re-splicing. Environmental factors, such as temperature and vibration, should be considered, as they can affect splice performance over time .

Summary of Key Requirements

  • Fiber stripping: Use precise tools, avoid microfractures, strip 10–20 mm.
  • Cleaning: Remove all contaminants with IPA.
  • Cleave quality: Flat, perpendicular end face using a precision cleaver.
  • Alignment: Accurate fiber alignment in the splicer to minimize loss.
  • Fusion parameters: Follow manufacturer-recommended arc settings.
  • Protection: Apply heat-shrink or clamshell sleeves; maintain proper bending radius.
  • Testing: Inspect visually and measure optical loss; re-splice if necessary.
  • Environmental control: Minimize vibration, temperature extremes, and mechanical stress during and after splicing. Following these requirements ensures low-loss, reliable, and durable fiber optic fusion splices suitable for high-performance networks .
