To connect a pigtail, you will need:

  • Fusion splicer: Aligns and fuses the fibers for a low-loss connection .
  • Fiber cleaver: Cuts the fiber ends cleanly at a precise 90° angle .
  • Alcohol and lint-free wipes: Cleans the fiber ends to remove dust and oils .
  • Heat-shrink sleeves or mechanical splice protectors: Protects the fused joint .
  • Fiber stripper: Removes the outer jacket and coating to expose the bare fiber .

Step-by-Step Connection Process

  1. Slide on the protection sleeve: Place the heat-shrink sleeve on the fiber before splicing; it cannot be added afterward .
  2. Strip the fiber: Carefully remove the outer jacket and coating to expose 30–40 mm of bare fiber without nicking it .
  3. Clean the fiber: Wipe the bare fiber with isopropyl alcohol using lint-free wipes to remove dust and contaminants .
  4. Cleave the fiber: Use a fiber cleaver to cut the fiber at a perfect 90° angle; a poor cleave can cause high splice loss .
  5. Load fibers into the splicer: Place both the pigtail and main fiber into the fusion splicer's V-grooves; the splicer aligns the cores automatically .
  6. Fuse the fibers: Start the splicer to create the fusion joint; the splicer will display estimated splice loss in dB .
  7. Protect the splice: Slide the heat-shrink sleeve over the joint and use the splicer's oven to seal it, ensuring durability .
  8. Test the connection: Use an OTDR or power meter to verify the splice quality and ensure low signal loss .
