They are often configured in N×M arrangements, such as 2×2 or 4×4, and can be designed for specific splitting ratios like 50/50, 30/70, or custom values . Couplers typically rely on evanescent wave coupling, where two fiber cores are brought close together so light transfers between them, often through fusion-splicing or twisting fibers .
