A photovoltaic AC coupler integrates battery storage with an existing solar system by connecting a hybrid inverter on the AC side, allowing excess solar energy to charge batteries and supply loads without modifying the original PV DC wiring.

Core Concept

In an AC-coupled system, the solar panels remain connected to their original grid-tied inverter, which converts DC electricity from the panels into AC for immediate use in the home or business. A hybrid inverter with battery storage is then connected in parallel on the AC side of the electrical panel. This hybrid inverter can convert AC back to DC to charge the batteries and reconvert DC to AC when discharging to supply loads or the grid, effectively acting as the intelligent core of the system .

Energy Flow and Operation

  1. Direct Consumption: Solar power generated by the PV inverter is first used to supply the building's AC loads.
  2. Battery Charging: Any surplus AC power is routed through the hybrid inverter to charge the battery bank. The inverter regulates charging to prevent overcharging and ensures safe operation .
  3. Grid Interaction: If the battery is full and loads are met, excess energy can be fed back to the grid. During a blackout, the hybrid inverter can create a micro-grid, allowing PV inverters to continue supplying power to critical loads .
  4. Load Management: The hybrid inverter monitors real-time consumption and PV production, optimizing when to charge or discharge the battery to maximize self-consumption and reduce grid dependency .
