Role of Power Electronics

In the Energy Internet, power electronics serve as the interface between energy generation, storage, and consumption, enabling seamless integration of multiple energy carriers such as electricity, hydrogen, and thermal energy . They allow for high-efficiency conversion, voltage and frequency regulation, and support for bidirectional energy flows, which are critical for smart grids, microgrids, and virtual power plants.

Technological Developments

Recent advances in semiconductor devices have significantly enhanced power electronics capabilities. The transition from silicon to wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) enables higher switching frequencies, reduced conduction losses, and operation at elevated temperatures, improving efficiency and power density .
