Single-core optical fiber splicing is the process of joining two fiber ends to create a continuous optical path for light transmission. Unlike connectors, which allow temporary connections, splicing produces a permanent joint with minimal signal loss and back reflection, making it essential for long-haul networks, backbone extensions, and repairs . There are two main splicing methods:

  1. Fusion Splicing – Permanent, low-loss, and highly reliable.
  2. Mechanical Splicing – Semi-permanent, faster, and used for temporary or emergency connections. For single-mode fibers, fusion splicing is preferred due to the small core size and the need for precise alignment to minimize insertion loss .

Fusion Splicing Procedure

Mechanical Splicing (Optional)

Mechanical splicing involves aligning fibers in a self-contained assembly with an index-matching gel. It is faster and does not require fusion equipment but typically has higher insertion loss (~0.1–0.3 dB) and is less durable than fusion splicing. It is mainly used for temporary repairs or multimode fibers .
