How to install ASS fiber optic cable on power poles

ADSS fiber optic cables can be safely installed on power poles by following proper planning, hardware selection, tensioning, and safety procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations and long-term reliability.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, conduct a site survey to map the route, identify existing poles, obstacles, and power lines, and determine splice points and slack storage locations. Obtain permits from local authorities and coordinate with utility companies if sharing poles with power lines. Ensure poles are “made ready” and capable of supporting the cable load without structural modifications .

Cable Selection

Use All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables, which are non-conductive and designed to withstand high-voltage environments. ADSS cables contain aramid yarn or glass-reinforced plastic for strength, are lightweight, UV-resistant, and flexible, allowing spans up to 1000 meters between poles . Ensure the cable jacket is carbon-black polyethylene for UV protection.

Hardware and Mounting

Select non-metallic suspension clamps, tension clamps, and brackets rated for the cable's weight and wind load. For figure-8 cables, the messenger portion supports the cable, while the optical fibers are loosely distributed in the core to prevent attenuation. Dead-end poles require proper termination fixtures, and intermediate poles maintain safe sag and tension .

Installation Procedure

  1. Measure spans between poles and calculate sag and tension according to cable specifications.
  2. Install clamps and brackets on poles, ensuring sufficient clearance from power lines per the National Electrical Safety Code.
  3. Pull the cable using a reel or winch, maintaining proper tension to avoid overstressing the fibers.
  4. Secure the cable at dead-end and intermediate poles, adjusting sag to accommodate wind, ice, and thermal expansion.
  5. Perform tension checks and lash-back tests to ensure stability and prevent movement or damage .

Safety Considerations

Working near power lines is hazardous. All personnel must wear PPE, including hard hats, gloves, steel-toed boots, and protective clothing. Maintain three-point contact when climbing ladders or poles, and ensure hands are free of tools when ascending or descending. Only trained personnel should perform aerial installations .

Maintenance

After installation, conduct routine inspections for cable integrity, sag, and hardware condition. Clean and check clamps, and monitor for environmental damage or interference from wildlife . By following these steps, ADSS fiber optic cables can be installed safely and efficiently on power poles, providing reliable aerial fiber connectivity while minimizing risks and maintenance issues .
