What type of fiber optic multimode is it

Multimode fiber optic cables are classified into OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5 based on core size, bandwidth, and optimized light sources.

Core Sizes and Light Propagation

Multimode fibers have a larger core diameter than single-mode fibers, typically 50 µm or 62.5 µm, allowing multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. This enables easier light injection and lower-cost optical sources such as LEDs and VCSELs, making multimode fiber ideal for short-distance, high-capacity applications like enterprise LANs and data centers .

OM Classification System

The TIA-498 and IEC 60793-2-10 standards define multimode fiber grades:

  • OM1: 62.5/125 µm core, LED-optimized, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 33 meters, typically with an orange jacket. Mostly legacy installations .
  • OM2: 50/125 µm core, LED-optimized, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 82 meters, also with an orange jacket. Common for 1 Gigabit Ethernet .
  • OM3: 50/125 µm core, laser-optimized, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters, and 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet up to 100 meters, with an aqua jacket .
  • OM4: 50/125 µm core, laser-optimized for VCSELs, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 550 meters, backward compatible with OM3, also aqua jacket .
  • OM5: 50/125 µm core, optimized for Short Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM), enabling multiple wavelengths over a single fiber, typically with a lime green jacket .

Bandwidth and Distance

The classification reflects effective modal bandwidth (EMB) and maximum transmission distance. Higher OM numbers generally support higher data rates and longer distances due to reduced modal dispersion and laser optimization. For example, OM3 and OM4 are suitable for 10–100 Gigabit Ethernet, while OM1 and OM2 are limited to lower speeds and shorter distances .

Applications

  • OM1/OM2: Legacy LANs, short-distance connections, cost-sensitive installations.
  • OM3/OM4: Modern data centers, high-speed Ethernet, backbone cabling.
  • OM5: Future-proof networks using SWDM for multiple wavelengths, high-capacity data centers .

Summary

To classify multimode fiber, consider core size, bandwidth, light source optimization, and OM grade. Visual cues like jacket color can help identify fiber type, but standards and specifications should guide deployment decisions for performance and future scalability .
