CID files are used to configure and integrate digital protection relays with SCADA systems and other relays under IEC 61850 standards.

What is a CID File?

A CID (Configured IED Description) file is a device-specific configuration file derived from an ICD (IED Capability Description) file. It contains the settings and communication parameters for a particular Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) or protection relay. CID files are essential for enabling IEC 61850 communication, allowing relays to exchange data with SCADA systems or other relays in a standardized, vendor-independent manner .

Role in Relay Protection

CID files are used to:

• Configure relay communication: They define IP addresses, GOOSE messaging, and MMS client/server settings for the relay .
• Integrate with SCADA: CID files allow SCADA systems to recognize the relay's data model and subscribe to real-time measurements and events .
• Enable interoperability: By using CID files, relays from different manufacturers can communicate seamlessly in a digital substation environment .

Loading CID Files into Relays

The process varies by manufacturer:

• VAMP Relays: Use VAMPSet software to connect to the relay, then select Communication → Configure with SCD File. If multiple CID files exist, export the specific CID from the SCD file using VAMP SCD Editor, then load it into the relay. Ensure the TCP protocol is set to IEC 61850 for proper communication .
• MiCOM Relays: Export the ICD file from the relay project, generate the CID file, and import it back into the relay using S1 Studio or Energy Studio. Reboot the relay to apply settings .
• ABB RET615: Export the SCD file from the IED, then select the appropriate CID file for the device to configure communication and protection settings .
• SEL Relays: CID or ICD files can be read to generate an SCD project file, which is then used to configure the relay and integrate it into the substation network .

Best Practices

• Always verify that the relay firmware supports IEC 61850 before loading CID files .
• Ensure the relay and SCADA system are on the same subnet for proper MMS communication .
• Use manufacturer-specific tools (e.g., VAMPSet, S1 Studio, DIGSI 5) to avoid configuration errors .
