The Three Windows

  1. First Window (850 nm)
    • Wavelength Range: Approximately 810–890 nm

    • Applications: Short-distance, high-speed links such as data centers, enterprise LANs, and automotive or aerospace networks. Often paired with VCSELs (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers) for cost-effective deployment .
  2. Second Window (1310 nm)
    • Wavelength Range: 1260–1360 nm

  3. Third Window (1550 nm)

    • Characteristics: Minimal attenuation (~0.2 dB/km) and compatibility with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), allowing long-haul transmission.
    • Applications: Long-distance telecommunications, high-capacity DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) systems, and backbone networks. Preferred for long-haul applications due to the lowest signal loss .
