Structure of 100G Optical Modules

Core Architecture: Most 100G modules, such as QSFP28, use a 4×25G parallel architecture, where four independent channels each transmit 25Gbps, achieving an aggregate 100Gbps data rate . The main structural components include:

  • Transmitter Components:
    • Laser Chips: Either VCSEL arrays for short-range (SR) or DFB/EML lasers for longer distances (CWDM4, LR4) are used . EML lasers provide stable wavelength and high signal quality for long-distance transmission.
    • Driver ICs: Control the laser output for each channel, ensuring precise modulation .
  • Receiver Components:
    • Photodetectors (PD/APD): Convert incoming optical signals into electrical signals. APDs are used for higher sensitivity in longer-range modules .
    • Transimpedance Amplifiers (TIA): Amplify the weak electrical signals from photodetectors .

    • DSP Chips: Optional in 100G modules, mainly for control and signal integrity management .
  • Optical Sub-Assemblies (OSA):
    • Tx OSA: Integrates lasers and driver circuits.
    • Rx OSA: Integrates photodetectors and TIAs. Multiplexing/demultiplexing is applied for WDM modules .
  • Controller and Memory:
    • Microprocessor chips manage module operation, while EEPROM stores configuration and communicates with the host via I2C .

    • Assemble Tx and Rx OSAs with precise alignment of lasers, photodetectors, and fiber arrays.
    • Use thin-film filters (TFF) for WDM multiplexing in CWDM/DWDM modules .
    • Integrate driver ICs, TIAs, and CDR chips onto the PCB.
  3. Module Assembly:
    • Combine OSAs with PCB and housing, ensuring minimal optical loss and electrical signal integrity.
    • Apply hermetic or non-hermetic packaging depending on module type and cost considerations .
  4. Testing and Calibration:
    • Perform optical power, wavelength, and BER (bit error rate) testing.
    • Calibrate CDR and DSP functions to ensure signal quality.
    • Verify compliance with IEEE or MSA standards (e.g., 100GBASE-SR4, CWDM4, PSM4), .
  5. Final Inspection and Shipping:
    • Conduct environmental and reliability tests.
    • Label and package modules for deployment in data centers or telecom networks.
