Overview and Function

Optical modules, also known as optical transceivers, are essential components in modern communication systems. They operate at the physical layer of the OSI model, bridging network equipment such as switches, routers, and servers with fiber optic cables. Their primary function is photoelectric conversion: converting electrical signals into optical signals for transmission and converting received optical signals back into electrical signals for processing .

Core Components

  1. Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Contains a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) that emits modulated optical signals. TOSA includes an optical interface, monitoring photodiode, housing, and driver circuits. Laser diodes are preferred for high-speed, long-distance transmission due to higher output power and efficiency, while LEDs are used for low-rate, short-distance applications .
  2. Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts incoming optical signals into electrical signals using photodetectors such as PIN diodes or avalanche photodiodes (APDs). APDs provide higher sensitivity through avalanche multiplication. The ROSA also includes a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) and post-amplifier to produce a stable electrical output .
  3. Functional Circuits and Interfaces: These manage signal processing, automatic optical power control, and digital diagnostic monitoring, ensuring stable performance and interoperability across devices .

Types of Optical Modules

  • SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Speeds up to 1 Gbps, suitable for enterprise networks.
  • SFP+: Enhanced SFP, supporting up to 10 Gbps, common in data centers.
  • QSFP (Quad SFP): Supports 40–100 Gbps, ideal for high-performance computing and backbone networks.
  • CFP (C Form-factor Pluggable): Designed for 100 Gbps and beyond, used in long-haul and metro networks . Modules can support single-mode fiber for long distances or multi-mode fiber for shorter distances. Advanced modules now support 400 Gbps and higher, with smaller form factors, energy efficiency, and AI-enabled self-monitoring for network management .

Modulation and Advanced Features

Modern optical modules use various modulation formats such as NRZ, PAM4, CWDM, DWDM, and coherent optics (e.g., DP-QPSK, QAM-16) to increase data rates and spectral efficiency. Some modules implement single-fiber bi-directional (BiDi) transmission, allowing simultaneous send and receive on one fiber, reducing fiber usage .
