Typical operating times are very short, around 20–50 milliseconds for electromechanical relays and 10 milliseconds for digital relays, depending on the relay design and system standards (IEC 60255-151, IEEE C37.91) . Time Overcurrent Relay (ANSI 51) Time overcurrent relays operate based on both the magnitude of the overcurrent and the duration of the fault. The higher the current, the faster the relay trips. These relays can be classified as:

  • Definite-Time Overcurrent Relay: Trips after a fixed time delay regardless of current magnitude. The time delay is set to coordinate with upstream and downstream protection devices to ensure selective tripping .
  • Inverse-Time Overcurrent Relay: The operating time decreases as the current increases. This type is widely used because it provides faster protection for severe faults while allowing minor overcurrents to persist briefly without tripping . Coordination and Discrimination

In a power system, relays are set with staggered time delays to ensure that the breaker closest to the fault trips first. For example, a relay at location B may have the shortest delay to allow a fuse at location A to operate first. Subsequent relays at locations C, D, and E are set with progressively longer delays (t1, t2, etc.) to maintain selective tripping and avoid simultaneous operation of multiple breakers . This coordination is crucial for minimizing outage areas and protecting equipment efficiently.
