OTDR Fiber Optic Cable Single Reel Test

OTDR testing a single reel of fiber involves measuring fiber loss, locating splices and connectors, and documenting the trace to ensure cable quality before deployment.

Equipment Needed

  • OTDR device suitable for the fiber type (singlemode or multimode)
  • Launch cable (optional but recommended) to avoid dead zones at the fiber start
  • Connectors/adapters compatible with the fiber under test
  • Computer or storage device for saving OTDR traces and reports

Test Setup

  1. Connect the OTDR to one end of the fiber reel. If using a launch cable, connect it between the OTDR and the fiber reel to ensure accurate measurement of the first connector and fiber segment .
  2. Select the appropriate wavelength for testing: typically 1310 nm and 1550 nm for singlemode fibers, or 850 nm and 1300 nm for multimode fibers .
  3. Set OTDR parameters:
    • Pulse width: Shorter pulses for high spatial resolution (detecting closely spaced events), longer pulses for longer fiber distances .
    • Averaging time: Minimum 45 seconds; increase for better accuracy .
    • Dynamic range: Adjust based on fiber length to balance distance and resolution .

Performing the Test

  • Automode can be used to automatically detect the fiber link and suggest initial parameters .
  • Manual adjustments may be necessary to detect low-loss events or closely spaced splices.
  • Bidirectional testing is recommended for accurate loss measurement, especially for Tier 2 testing per TIA standards .
  • Record the OTDR trace for each wavelength and pulse width used.

Interpreting Results

  • Identify events: Connectors, splices, and faults appear as peaks or dips in the OTDR trace .
  • Measure loss: The OTDR calculates loss for each event and the total fiber attenuation.
  • Check for anomalies: High reflectance or unexpected loss may indicate defects or poor splicing.
  • Document results: Save traces and generate reports for quality assurance and future troubleshooting .

Best Practices

  • Use a launch cable to avoid dead zones at the fiber start.
  • Test both directions for accurate loss characterization.
  • Use multiple pulse widths to detect all events and ensure maximum resolution.
  • Compare results with manufacturer specifications for the fiber reel.
  • Maintain a baseline record for future network maintenance or troubleshooting . By following these steps, OTDR testing of a single fiber reel ensures that the cable meets performance standards, identifies any defects, and provides a documented baseline for installation and future maintenance.
