Wafer Fabrication and Chip Production

The process begins with semiconductor wafer fabrication, which forms the core electronic and optical chips. For laser chips like VCSELs or DFB lasers, III-V materials such as GaAs or InP are grown using MOCVD to achieve precise wavelength control and high efficiency . Optical Component Integration

Module Assembly and Packaging

Optical modules are assembled on PCB or ceramic substrates, with active alignment to ensure proper laser-to-fiber coupling. Modules may use hermetic or non-hermetic packaging depending on application requirements, and common designs often employ automated assembly robots for consistent quality . Thermal management is critical, with heat sinks, thermal vias, and copper planes incorporated to dissipate heat from high-speed components . Encapsulation with optical adhesives protects components while maintaining transparency and thermal conductivity.

Testing and Quality Control

Rigorous testing ensures reliability and performance. Optical testing measures output power, wavelength, and eye diagram quality, while electrical testing evaluates jitter, rise/fall times, and voltage/current parameters of drivers, TIAs, and PHY chips . Incoming materials, including TOSA/ROSA components and housings, undergo IQC inspection to prevent defective parts from entering production . Aging tests and automated module-level tests further ensure long-term stability and adherence to specifications .
