An optical module is a photoelectric converter that transforms electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, serving as a core component in fiber-optic communication systems.

Overview

An optical module functions at the physical layer of the OSI model and is essential for transmitting data over optical fibers. Its primary role is photoelectric conversion, enabling electrical signals from electronic devices to be converted into optical signals for fiber transmission, and then back into electrical signals at the receiving end .

Structure

Optical modules typically consist of:

  • Optoelectronic devices: Includes optical transmitters (laser diodes or LEDs) and optical receivers (photodetector diodes) that perform the actual conversion between electrical and optical signals .
  • Functional circuits: Driver and preamplifier circuits process electrical signals before transmission and after reception.
  • Optical interfaces: Optical bores or connectors guide light into and out of the module, ensuring efficient coupling with optical fibers . Specialized designs may include single or dual transmitters/receivers depending on whether the module is intended for transmission, reception, or full-duplex communication .

Working Principle

  1. Transmission: Electrical signals enter the module through the transmit interface. The driver circuit modulates the semiconductor laser diode (LD) or LED to emit optical signals at the corresponding bit rate .
  2. Propagation: The modulated optical signals travel through optical fibers to the receiving module.
  3. Reception: The photodetector diode converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. These signals are amplified and output at the original bit rate .

Advanced Modules

High-speed optical-to-electrical converters, such as the Keysight N7005A, support frequencies up to 60 GHz and are used with oscilloscopes for system-level testing and troubleshooting of optical signals at speeds up to 56 Gbaud PAM4 . Co-packaged or hybrid-integrated modules can provide ultra-compact multi-channel arrays with excellent optical coupling and wide frequency response, suitable for microwave photonics and high-speed data applications .
