Role of the Optocoupler

In series voltage regulators, especially in isolated switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) or high-voltage linear regulators, the optocoupler acts as a bridge between the output (secondary) side and the control (primary) side. It transmits the feedback signal without direct electrical connection, ensuring galvanic isolation and protecting low-voltage control circuits from high-voltage outputs . The optocoupler typically consists of an LED on the secondary side and a phototransistor on the primary side. The LED current is modulated according to the output voltage, and the phototransistor converts this optical signal back into an electrical signal to adjust the regulator's control element, such as a series MOSFET or pass transistor .

The shunt regulator compares the output voltage to a reference and adjusts the current through the optocoupler LED accordingly. The LED current is proportional to the voltage error, and the phototransistor modulates the control signal to the series pass element, effectively regulating the output.

Biasing Considerations

Proper biasing of the optocoupler is critical for linear and accurate feedback. This involves setting the correct forward current through the LED and ensuring the phototransistor operates in its linear region. Poor biasing can lead to nonlinearity, saturation, slow response, or even instability in the regulator . Compensation networks are often added to the feedback loop to optimize transient response and prevent oscillations.

High-Voltage Series Regulation

For high-voltage applications, optocouplers can be combined with high-voltage MOSFETs to create a simple linear series regulator. In such designs, the optocoupler receives a voltage signal from a photodiode array or shunt network and directly drives the gate of the MOSFET, stabilizing the output voltage while keeping the control circuitry isolated from the high-voltage output .
