Optical cables are divided into single-mode optical cables

Single-mode optical cables are classified by their small core size, single light propagation mode, specific wavelength range, and compliance with international standards.

Core Size and Light Mode

Single-mode fibers (SMF) have a core diameter of 8–10 micrometers, which is significantly smaller than multimode fibers. This narrow core allows only one transverse mode of light to propagate, minimizing modal dispersion and enabling long-distance, high-speed transmission . The light travels parallel to the fiber axis, often referred to as the fundamental or mono-mode.

Wavelength and Transmission

Single-mode fibers typically operate at 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelengths, which are less prone to attenuation and suitable for long-haul communication . The cutoff wavelength for single-mode operation is below 1260 nm according to TIA-492CAAA standards, ensuring proper single-mode behavior across the telecommunications C-band and O-band .

Standards and Subtypes

Single-mode fibers are classified according to international standards:

  • G.652.D: The most common “future-proof” fiber, supporting Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and GPON networks .
  • G.657: Designed for bend-insensitive applications, often used in FTTH deployments.
  • OS1: Tight-buffered, indoor use, supports up to 100 Gbps over 10 km.
  • OS2: Loose-tube, outdoor/long-haul use, supports up to 100 Gbps over distances exceeding 40 km .

Jacket Color and Construction

Single-mode fibers are often yellow-jacketed for easy identification, while multimode fibers are typically orange or aqua . Construction types include tight-buffered for indoor installations and loose-tube for outdoor or long-distance applications.

Performance Characteristics

Single-mode fibers are ideal for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications due to minimal signal loss and low dispersion. They are commonly used in telecom backbones, data center interconnects, and 5G fronthaul networks . By examining core size, light propagation mode, operating wavelength, standards compliance, and jacket color, you can accurately classify an optical cable as single-mode.
