Principles of Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensors operate by modulating light properties—such as intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time—within an optical fiber in response to environmental parameters like temperature, strain, pressure, or vibration . The basic structure of an optical fiber includes a core, cladding, and buffer coating, where total internal reflection ensures minimal light loss and protects the fiber from physical damage . Changes in the environment alter the light signal, which is then detected and converted into measurable electronic signals.

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors are categorized based on their construction and sensing mechanism:

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, with environmental changes directly affecting the light traveling through the fiber .
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external transducer, which modulates the light signal .
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic elements, allowing light to interact with both the fiber and external devices . Specialized sensors like Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) are widely used for high-resolution strain and temperature measurements, where the reflected wavelength shifts in response to physical changes .

Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS)

DFOS transforms standard optical fibers into continuous sensors capable of monitoring thousands of points over long distances . Techniques include:

  • Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): Detects vibrations and sound along the fiber.
  • Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS): Measures temperature variations.
  • Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS): Monitors mechanical strain. DFOS systems use interrogators that launch laser pulses and analyze backscattered light (Rayleigh, Brillouin, or Raman scattering) to localize and quantify changes with meter or sub-meter resolution .

Fiber optic sensing is applied across multiple domains:

  • Structural Health Monitoring: Bridges, tunnels, and buildings for real-time strain and vibration detection .
  • Energy and Oil & Gas: Pipeline monitoring, downhole reservoir characterization, and well optimization .
  • Security and Surveillance: Detecting intrusions, vehicle movement, or digging activity along borders and critical infrastructure .
  • Industrial and Aerospace: Monitoring high-voltage equipment, jet engines, and environments with electromagnetic interference .
