Gb cable tray corrosion protection level

GB-standard cable trays require zinc coatings with minimum thicknesses of 45–55 µm for hot-dip galvanization, ensuring effective corrosion protection in harsh environments.

Corrosion Protection Standards

Cable trays in China follow two main GB standards for corrosion protection:

  • Electro-galvanized trays: Coating is applied via electrolysis, producing a thin, bright, uniform zinc layer. The primary standard is GB/T 26941.1-2011, with a typical coating mass of ≥275 g/m², suitable for moderate environments and marine transit protection .
  • Hot-dip galvanized trays: Steel components are submerged in molten zinc, forming a thick zinc-iron alloy layer with superior adhesion. The standard is GB/T 13912-2020, specifying local zinc thickness ≥45 µm for tray sheets (1.5–3 mm thick) and ≥55 µm for heavier components like brackets . This method is preferred for outdoor, industrial, and coastal environments.

Environmental Suitability

The corrosion protection level depends on the environmental aggressiveness:

  • C1–C2: Indoor, low-humidity or climate-controlled areas; light-duty galvanized or painted steel is sufficient .
  • C3–C5: Urban, industrial, or coastal areas with moderate pollution; hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel is recommended .
  • C8: Extreme environments such as coastal marine areas with high salinity or tropical high-humidity zones; requires hot-dip galvanization with ≥120 µm zinc thickness or advanced coatings like Zn-Al-Mg alloys for self-healing and long-term protection .

Testing and Quality Requirements

  • Local Thickness Measurement: Magnetic thickness gauges are used to ensure all points meet minimum thickness requirements .
  • Mean Coating Mass: Gravimetric (dissection) method determines the average zinc mass per unit area for arbitration .
  • Adhesion Test: Cross-cut or scribe tests verify coating adhesion and resistance to peeling .
  • Appearance: Coating should be continuous, uniform, and smooth; minor dull areas are acceptable, but defects like bare spots or blisters are not .

Enhanced Protection Options

  • Higher Zinc Coating: Coatings of ≥350 g/m² extend service life in aggressive environments .
  • Zinc-Aluminum Coatings (Galvalume/AZ150): Alloy coatings with 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon offer 2–4 times better corrosion resistance, especially against chloride-induced white rust . In summary, GB-standard cable trays achieve corrosion protection primarily through hot-dip galvanization, with minimum zinc thickness and coating mass specified according to component size and environmental severity. For extreme conditions (C8), thicker coatings or advanced alloy coatings are recommended to ensure long-term durability and safety.
