Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light through optical fibers and detecting changes in light properties caused by environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, or chemical concentrations.

Working Principle

Fiber optic sensors use light as the sensing medium. The basic principle involves sending light from an optical source (like a laser diode, LED, or superluminescent source) through an optical fiber to a sensing element. The sensing element, which can be intrinsic (within the fiber) or extrinsic (external transducer), interacts with the physical parameter being measured. This interaction causes changes in the light's intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization, which are then detected by an optical detector. The detector converts these changes into electrical signals for analysis by an electronic processing unit such as a wave analyzer or optical spectrum analyzer ( ).

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element. Environmental changes directly modulate the light traveling through the fiber. Examples include fiber Bragg gratings and interferometric sensors ( ).
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element. The modulation occurs outside the fiber, and the fiber primarily serves as a light conduit ( ).
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles, with the fiber carrying light both into and out of the sensing device ( ).

Fiber optic sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring, industrial process control, medical sensing, and hazardous environments due to their immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, and ability to operate in extreme conditions ( ).
