How to cold-splice fiber optic cables and pigtails

Cold-splicing fiber optic cables involves aligning and securing bare fiber ends in a mechanical splice without heat, creating a low-loss, reliable connection.

What is Cold Splicing?

Cold splicing, also called mechanical splicing, is a method of joining two optical fibers by precisely aligning their cores inside a splice device, without using a fusion splicer or heat. It is faster and more convenient for field installations, especially in FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) deployments, and is ideal when you need a quick, low-cost connection .

Tools and Materials Needed

To perform a cold splice, you will need:

  • Cold splice connectors or mechanical splicers with v-groove alignment
  • Fiber optic pigtails (pre-terminated on one end)
  • Fiber stripper to remove the protective coating
  • Cleaver to cut the fiber to a precise length
  • Alcohol wipes for cleaning the bare fiber
  • Protective sleeves or snap rings to secure the splice
  • Optional: magnification or inspection scope to verify alignment

Step-by-Step Cold Splicing Procedure

  1. Prepare the Fiber: Strip about 3 cm of the fiber coating from both ends and clean the exposed glass with alcohol wipes to remove dust and oils .
  2. Cleave the Fiber: Use a fiber cleaver to cut the fiber ends to a precise length, typically around 1.4 cm, ensuring a flat, perpendicular end face .
  3. Insert into Cold Splicer: Place each fiber end into the mechanical splice or cold connector. Ensure the fibers are seated in the v-groove or alignment slot .
  4. Secure the Splice: Snap the side rings or locking mechanism to hold the fibers in place. Make sure the fibers are tightly aligned and the splice is stable .
  5. Test the Connection: Use an optical power meter or OTDR to verify signal continuity and measure insertion loss. Adjust if necessary .
  6. Protect the Splice: Cover the splice with a protective sleeve or enclosure to prevent mechanical stress and environmental damage .

Best Practices

  • Always clean fibers thoroughly before splicing to minimize signal loss.
  • Use factory-terminated pigtails to reduce field polishing errors and improve reliability .
  • Handle fibers carefully to avoid breakage or injury from glass shards .
  • Cold splices are generally slightly higher in loss than fusion splices, so use them where convenience and speed outweigh minimal performance differences . Cold splicing is a practical, efficient method for connecting fiber optic cables and pigtails in the field, providing a reliable, low-cost solution for network installations without requiring a fusion splicer.
